Decorating a Rose Parade float is a truly unique experience. The culmination of a year-long process of concept, design, construction, surfacing, and finishing, floral decoration is the final step in the process of making our creative vision come to life. Float decoration happens on Saturdays in December and goes into overdrive beginning December 26 with decorating occurring 15 hours a day through December 31. It is the largest floral event in the world.
The Tournament of Roses requires that all surfaces of every float be completely covered in organic material. The painstaking process of decorating a Rose Parade float involves hours of applying crushed, ground, chopped, or trimmed seeds, bark, rice, beans, and dried leaves, stems, and flowers to the float surface. White glue and hot clear glue are the fixatives used to adhere the dry materials to the surfaces of the float. Everything is done by hand. Live floral material, flowers, and roses are the last items to be used in the decorating process. The application of live flowers and floral material usually occurs beginning December 28.
The Shriners Hospitals for Children entry in the Rose Parade is decorated by volunteers. It is one of several floats that use volunteers in the decorating process. In 2016 and 2018, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Rose Parade float won the coveted Tournament Volunteers trophy for best design and decoration for floats 35 feet and under. For the 2019 Rose Parade, the Shriners Hospitals for Children entry is 45 feet in length, stands 22 feet tall, has 12 riders and 12 outwalkers, and is titled “Fezzy’s Garden of Hope and Healing.”
